Well, I guess it's that time of year when the weather goes crazy! Hope everyone enjoyed their surprise "snow" days last week. It was nice to have that little break to help us get through the long stretch to Spring Break!
Speaking of Spring Break...it is so hard to believe we are already starting to think about end of the events like Spring Break! May will be here before we know it and we still have a lot of work to do to get ready for 3rd grade. We have really been working on behavior and work expectations in our class. Sometimes, the transition to 3rd grade can be tough on some students. It really is going from primary to intermediate school and the expectations from teachers will really change. Please work toward holding your child to the high standards that will be expected of them next year. I know they will be ready and be successful next year!
A few notes to mention....
-Please be mindful of meal charges. The lunchroom has let us know that there have been many charges recently. Keep an eye on your child's account balance. It is easy to add money through the website or to send it in.
-This Wednesday, 2/25, is the deadline to turn in the Six Flags reading sheet to earn a free ticket. Please total up the minutes your child read and send in the signed form if they met the goal! This was an optional assignment, so if your child chose not to participate, that is fine.
-Read Across America day is this Monday, March 2! This will be a great day to celebrate reading and all we can accomplish by becoming great readers. As part of the day, we will also be celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday. If your child would like to purchase a Cat in the Hat hat to wear on Monday, they can bring in $2, $4 or $5 depending on the style they wish to purchase.
-We have been working on counting money. Here is a link to a video that may help your child with this skill if they are having trouble. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zx9oU8-k3gI
Soon we will be telling time, so please work on that skill at home too!
Here is what we are working on....
Reading- We are wrapping up our unit on Fairy Tales and Fables. We will continue to work on identifying the beginning middle and end of literary text. Talk to your child about the beginning/middle/end of the text they are reading each night. Next we will be focusing on finding the main idea of text.
Writing-We have finished up with writing opinion pieces (for now...) and are working on some of the conventions of writing. We looked at adverbs last week. We talked about what they are and how they make our writing more interesting. Encourage your child to add adverbs to their writing to make the verbs they choose more interesting. Next, we will work on using apostrophes to form possessives and contractions.
Math-We will be working on portioning shapes into equal parts. This is to get your child ready for the language of fractions next year! Also, keep working on memorizing the addition facts to 20. Trust me as the parent of a 3rd grader who did not take my own advice...your child will have such an easier time if they know their addition facts!
As always, thank you for your support in our classroom!
Have a great week!
