I hope everyone had a wonderful break and is ready to tackle the second half of 2nd grade! May will be here before we know it!
We have a lot going on around our class. Here are a few things you may be interested in....
*We are currently taking the Student Learning Objectives pretest. You may also see these called SLO assessments. Second graders will take a post test in May and we'll compare the results to monitor growth. There is no need to study or prepare. These tests assess what we are learning every day in school.
*On Friday, January 26, we will be going on our filed trip to the Cobb County Safety Village. This is a wonderful field trip with lots of hands-on fun activities to help student learn about safety at home and out in the streets. Please send your child to school that day in comfortable play clothes. Watch the weather! We will be outside part of the day.
*On Thursday, February 12th, Dr. Champion will be leading the students in a musical at Barber Middle School. We have many students from our class participating. If your child would like to participate also, you have until This Friday, the 16th, to send in the permission form.
Attention!!! I am in need of a parent (or any adult...) to help me out with an organizing project here in the classroom. It can be any time during the school day, or even after school! If you think you would be able to help, please let me know. Our class would be very grateful. Nothing too difficult. Just a little time-consuming. Thank you!
Here is what we are learning...
Reading- Our class is paying attention to the characters in text. We are talking about how their voice will change depending on their emotion and how the characters handle challenges and events in the story. Talk with your child about how the characters in the stories they read at home respond.
Math- We are continuing to reinforce addition and subtraction skills. As you work on these skills at home, please remember to use the strategies we are learning here at school. Math looks very different from the way it did when we were in school. These math strategies will really help your child become a math thinker! If you don't understand a strategy, ask your child to explain it! They love to be the teachers!
Writing- We are getting ready to start our nest genre - opinion writing. Before we move to that, however, we are spending some time reviewing writing complete sentences. We are still seeing too many sentences with out a capital or punctuation or missing parts of the content so that it does not make sense. Please hold your child accountable for these things when they are writing at home.
Social Studies- We are finishing up a very interesting unit on Jackie Robinson. The students have been very interested in learning how his strong character helped him overcome adversity. Ask your child to tell you all about Jackie Robinson. Next, we will be studying the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King, JR.
As always, please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Just to see who is checking my BLOG, please write "I read it!" on your child's agenda page for today!
Have a great rest of your week and enjoy your long weekend coming up!
