What a great week of learning we have had! We are really getting settled into 2nd grade and are able to spend more time really working and learning! This is such a smart group of students and they make me so proud everyday with the questions they come up with and the things they notice. Ask your student what questions they asked during the day! That is a great addition to the usual "how was your day?" conversation you have each evening. It will also help your child see how important it is to ask questions and participate in learning, not just sit back and listen.
Next week is Fall Break! We will not have school. Our class has worked so hard already this year, they are really ready for a brain break. I hope everyone has a great week. We will not have any real homework over the break, but make sure you keep reading every day! If you are looking for something to do during the week off, here are a few ideas:
-We are getting ready to study the regions of Georgia. If you are traveling across our state, talk to your child about the ways the land changes. Look for the differences in trees and animals you see.
-Soon, we will be talking about the original residents of our state; the Creek and Cherokee native Americans. Near Cartersville you will find the Etowah Indian mounds and the Cherokee capital of New Echota. These would make great field trips to give your child some background knowledge before we start our units on these topics. If you look on line, you will find information about visiting both sites.
-Fernbank Science Center in Atlanta also has a wonderful exhibit about the regions of Ga.
Whatever you do next week, I hope you enjoy your time off from school and come back ready for the stretch to Thanksgiving!
Here are some dates coming up that you may want to add to your calendar:
September 10- Progress Reports go home
September 15-19- Fall Break
September 22- PTA Reflections Art Program Kickoff
September 23- PTA, WatchDOG BBQ family night
October 2- Math Night
October 4- PTA Mother/Daughter Self Defense class
What are we learning?
Math- Although our official study of place value has ended, this is a subject will will revisit all year. Next we will be practicing strategies to help us add and subtract fluently. I highly recommend getting a set of addition flash cards to practice the facts through 20.
Social Studies- We will do a quick review of reading a map, then move on to learning about the regions and rivers of Georgia.
Writing-We have started working on our first genre of the year...narratives! We started looking at the different parts (beginning, middle, end, setting, characters, problem, solution, etc) of a narrative. In the next few days, we will begin writing our own personal narratives.
Reading- We are talking about the questions good readers think about and answer as they read, such as: WHO is my book about? WHY are these things happening? WHERE is the story taking place? WHAT will happen next?
Thank you for visiting our class blog! I have added pages where you can see this month's specials and homework calendars. If there is anything else you would like to see, please let me know! And, as always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you ever have a question or concern.
