Classroom Behavior Management System: The Positive Points System

In our classroom we have a behavior management system that is based on points.  Hanging on our wall we have a chart that looks like this:

Every student has a clothespin (clip) with their name on it.  Each day all the students will start out with their clip on a 3.  If they remain on a 3 until the end of the day this means they had a good day.  They can be moved up to a 4 or 5 in certain situations; maybe they did something that stood out or was remarkably wonderful and I felt they deserved to be moved up.  Students can be moved down to a 2 or a 1.  This means that they broke a rule even after a verbal warning was given.  At the end of every day each student will write down their number in their take home folder so that you may see what number your child was on.  I also ask that you sign the folder each night so that I know you saw what number they received.  If students end the day on a 2 then they will be asked to fill out a behavior plan.  This is simply a piece of paper that they will write their name, the date, what they did wrong, and how they will change their behavior.  Then they will give the plan back to me.  If a student ends the day on a 1 they will be asked to write a behavior plan also but they must bring the plan home so that you can sign it.  It must be returned to me the next day.  If it is not returned a parent phone call will be made and that child will have to sit out of recess until it is returned.  I know sometimes students may be having a rough day or make a mistake and have to be moved down but I may move their clip back up if I see that they are making a positive change in their behavior.

At the end of every week students will add up their points and if they received 15 or more points then they may go to the treasure box to get a prize.  I tell my students that if they are on a 2 one day then they can try their best to make up for it the next day by trying their best to get on a 4 or maybe even a 5 the next day.
