Open House

ACWORTH OPEN HOUSE

Please join us in your student’s classroom to learn more about Application Based Learning, hear classroom expectations, and view student work. Two sessions will be held so families have the opportunity to visit more than one classroom.

A light hotdog supper will be provided courtesy of North Star Church. We will eat on the field—picnic style, so please bring chairs or blankets for your family.

Homework Letter

 

Hello Parents!

The wonderful time of homework is upon us! I wanted to include a letter that broke down exactly what we do so we do not have any confusion. Inside of your child’s homework notebook is a “Homework Monthly Calendar” sheet glued in. This sheet contains daily assignments for homework. The students should complete the one assignment for the date, and read 20min.

On Mondays I will assign a new word list to the students, this will be the list of words used when the assignment ask for a spelling or word list. The students will glue it into their agenda for that week so it is easy access. Throughout the course of the week, the students are to complete each night’s assignment activity. I will check for the activities on Friday. Everything should stay in their spiral notebook so that on Fridays they can make a stack of them, I can check over them real quick, and they can be returned by Monday. If a students does not have their homework turned in on Friday, they will be removed from the “Homework Club.” At the end of the month, whichever students are still in the homework club will receive some kind of treat.

In addition to the daily assignment, the students should be reading 20 minutes each night. My way of tracking this is for the students to write the title of the book and the time in their agenda. They should be showing me their agenda every morning when they unpack with a parent signature. This is my way of knowing that you are seeing their behavior for the day and any notes that may come home.

What We Are and Will Be Learning!

 

Reading and Writing:

we are working on writing our own Narratives and learning how to ask and answer questions about what we read. I encourage parents to read each night with their students and have them practice asking question about the book or retelling the story. This can be done by writing the answer to practice writing or just talking about the book like a family book club.

Math: Place Value and Mental Strategies

We have been working on identifying place value and writing numbers many different ways. We are starting adding and subtracting within 20 using mental strategies. The following link has some great games and resources for the students to practice more at home.

Social Studies: Georgia Regions

We will be studying the Georgia Regions next week. I will be sending home a paper copy of the study guide. But the one that I am uploading here has the picture cards to go with it if you would like to use them as well to help your student study.  They will need to be able to locate each region and tell us at least 2 things specific to each region.

About Mrs. Law

    I am so excited to be joining the Acworth Elementary 2nd Grade Team! I have been teaching for the past four years in cobb county and this year will be my first year at Acworth and my 5th year teaching 2nd grade. I am looking forward to getting to know each of your students and helping them realize all the amazing things the world has to offer. I truly love teaching and have a passion to help each child learn and reach their full potential.

• Home work will be starting the week of August 29th. We will be modeling how to complete homework in class next week. Please make sure that they complete the assignment each night and I will be checking for all activities on Friday. I know sometimes things come up so I give until the end of the week to check for all homework. Friday all assignments are due. A letter will be coming home Monday August 29th that explains the homework policy as well.
• Your student should be reading each night for 20 minutes (or this could be you reading to them). Please write down each night what they read and for how long in their agendas on that night. We will be checking to make sure they are reading.
• We are short on some supplies. If at all possible please send in the following: hand sanitizer, sharpened pencils
• The students are allowed to bring in water and a snack for SNACK TIME ONLY. Please have the water filled before coming to school and a healthy non-messy snack-such as fruit, crackers, fruit snacks, dry cereal, goldfish etc. No candy, cookies, or foods that make our fingers red as we work during snack time. Also no peanuts please.
