STEM activity in March was Gas In A Bag!  We were talking about plants and how plants take in Carbon Dioxide and give off Oxygen so we decided to make some gas.  It was a simple but great experiment.  Several of our bags burst open with Carbon Dioxide! IMG_6009

I never did get our Holiday Party pictures up.  Hope everyone had a wonderful break and Best Wishes for all of us in 2018.  It was so great to see everyone at our party!  I am so blessed to have such caring people in my life!

This week the 2nd graders worked on touch money in math.  3rd grade talked about quadrilaterals and learned that they have 4 sides. The 4th graders worked with parallel lines and the 5th graders learned about liquid measurement.  In Science we continued to talk about the water cycle.  Our weekly news article was about a weather satellite and we made Satellite Sundaes on Friday.  Wow, what a week.  Just one more and we will have our Thanksgiving Break!

Here are a few left over pictures from the Fall Festival and some new ones from this week's cooking lesson.

Just wanted to take a moment to make you aware of the fantastic day that your child had today!  Our wonderful principal, Ms. Nelson along with Ms. Tina from C & S Paving gave us a real treat.  The students were surprised with a Fall Festival.   There were 9 gigantic jump houses, games, face painting, and a DJ.  The students had cotton candy, popcorn and drinks.  They were also given their choice of a hamburger or hotdog lunch with chips and cookies.  The students were given 2 hours to do all of the activities outside.  It was an unbelievable treat and your child had a blast.  We have had a fantastic special week and Ms. Dobson and I have enjoyed the children very much.  Acworth really is a special place to teach!  Here are some highlights! This has been a fun week!  We had Storybook Character Day and Guertin and Dobson's classes dressed up as Pete the Cat.  We had a parade and then went to our classroom to work on a STEM challenge.

We listened to the story of The Three Little Pigs.  Following the story we broke up into groups.  One group made houses using straws and tape.  The second group made houses using mini marshmellows and toothpicks.  The final group made houses using Legos.

When we were done we tested the houses to see which ones passed the huffing and puffing test!  We also did a sequencing activity and a writing activity to go with the story.  It was a great day.  Here are some amazing pictures.   Class   IMG_4403 Parade AB

October 13, 2017

Welcome to Friday the 13th!!  Our week was pretty good.  We are talking a lot in class about being a good friend and only worrying about ourselves.  Sometimes these kiddos are more like siblings than classmates!  We have really missed Mrs. Gatewood this week.  I can't wait until our new paraprofessional starts.

In math this week we finished up Saxon Math lessons for a bit.  We will be focusing on showing progress for our GAA work.  Third, fourth and fifth grades will all be talking about fractions in some way.

The third grade standard- MCC.3.NF.3  d. Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or < .

The fourth grade standard- MCC.4.NF.2- Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators by creating common denominators or numerators or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as ½.  Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole.  Record the results of comparisons with symbols > = < and justify the conclusion by using a visual fraction model.

The fifth grade standard-  MGSE5.NF.1- Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions, including cases of unlike denominators (e.g., by using visual fraction models or equations to represent the problem).

That will keep us busy for a couple of weeks.  In science we are discussing matter. Next week we will focus on the different states of matter.

Today we made BBQ Hot Air Balloon Sandwiches and they were a big hit.  We sent home the recipe for you to try at home.  Here are a few pictures from the week.

They did some creative building in Science Lab.  I think these were called Zoobs.
