Today Well Star visited and shared some dental health tips! Here are some things they learned about.
SMILE POWER
What Your Child Learned from WellStar Today
The WellStar School Health Program visited your child’s classroom today to teach students about dental hygiene. During the “Smile Power” program, children learned the different parts of teeth, the types of teeth, and what they can do to make sure that they keep their teeth as healthy as possible. Sometime this week, take time to talk to your child about what he or she learned today.

SMILE POWER TIPS FOR PARENTS
- Make sure your child is brushing his or her teeth at least twice a day, making sure to brush for 2 minutes each time.
- Help your child floss his or her teeth at least once a day. The combination of brushing and flossing will break down the bacteria and sugar found in the mouth.
- Eat healthy, nutritious snacks that come from all 5 food groups: grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, and protein. Calcium strengthens our bones, but it also keeps our teeth strong. Make sure that your child is consuming calcium-rich foods every day. Some good examples of calcium rich foods include:
- Dairy products- milk, yogurt, cheese
- Non-dairy products- spinach, broccoli, salmon, baked beans
- Calcium fortified foods- cereal, bread, orange juice
- Try to limit the amount of sugar your child consumes each day. Trade sodas, candies, cookies, and cakes for more nutritious foods like vegetables, fruits, and cheese.
- Limit snacks. Make sure that you eat or drink sugary items with meals, instead of at snack time. This will limit the amount of time the sugar is in your mouth.
- Take your child to see the dentist at least twice a year. This will ensure that your child’s teeth are thoroughly cleaned every six months. Visiting the dentist, plus brushing and flossing daily will help your child to have a healthy, happy smile.
