News and Notes from 2nd Grade!
Thank you so much for a wonderful year! It is hard to believe this school year is almost over. This newsletter is to give you some information to help you wrap up your 2nd grade year and get ready for 3rd grade!
For now: We will continue to learn until the end of the day on the last day of school! Please continue to remind your child to come to school ready to learn and do their personal best each day. We are not done yet! Each class will continue to stay on their daily schedule and keep days as normal as possible.
Next week: Wednesday and Thursday are both early release days. Dismissal will begin at 12:10. Please do not bring anything, including backpacks, with you to school on Thursday. If you want to bring lunch on Thursday, make sure everything can be thrown away when you are done!
Report cards: Report cards will be completed after the last day of school. If you have sent in 2 stamps, your child’s report card will be mailed to you. If you have not sent in stamps, you will need to pick up the report card during office hours after June 3rd. It is not too late to send in 2 stamps if you have not done so already!
Fees: If your child has an outstanding fee such as ASP, lunch charge or missing media center book, their report card will be held at the school until that fee is settled.
Summer Skills: Although we all you want you to have a fun and relaxing summer, please don’t take the summer completely off! Make sure you read EVERY DAY!!!! Even a few weeks off will cause your child’s reading abilities to slide backwards. They have worked so hard this year! It’s also a great idea to keep a journal of activities over the summer. This will give your child a chance to keep using their writing skills. Don’t forget math! Keep working on memorizing the basic addition facts for fluency. If you’ve got those down, start working on learning the multiplication facts to get ahead for 3rd grade! Keep your math brains working!! Also, your child will be bringing home their incomplete math book from this year. Please feel free to work on those pages to practice the skills we have learned.
A note from your teachers....
First, We would like to tell you what a pleasure it has been being a part of your child’s life this year. We have truly enjoyed watching them learn and grow. What a great class this has been! We look forward to checking in on them as they go through school and continue to learn. Please make sure you continue to remind your child how important their responsibility in learning is. It is essential that they do their best, ask questions and look at school as an important job.
Have a wonderful summer!
Thank you for a fabulous year!

Spring Fling
Thank you so much to all the families that came out to the Spring Fling. We hope you had a wonderful time. Our basket had a lot of people bid on it. Thank you so much for helping make the Spring Fling successful for another year!!!
No More Homework
As we have stated before, in order for your child to get a 3 on his/her report card for the 4th Nine Weeks, he/she must fluently know his/her addition facts. We want students to have ample time to practice their facts, so instead of formal homework, please use this time to practice on Fast Math or with flash cards. Reading for 15 minutes each night will still be required. There are many websites to download flash cards from, or if you want some blank index cards to create your own flashcards, please let us know.
Field Day
Field Day is this Friday. Please make sure your child wears tennis shoes. Each child may bring in a water bottle to carry with us to the stations. Sun screen and a hat are also good ideas. Please let us know if you have any questions.
What will we be learning this week?
Reading: Fables: comparing two fables
Math: Representing and interpreting data
Writing: Writing a fable
Science: Life Cycles
Math
Represent and interpret data - Generate measurement data by measuring lengths of several objects to the nearest whole unit, or by making repeated measurements of the same object. Show the measurements by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in whole-number units.
Science
Students have learned that plants and animals pass through stages of life
called life cycles (birth, becoming adults, having offspring, and dying). We have also studied that offspring look like their parents.
This Week’s Homework
Please read 15 minutes and practice addition facts nightly.

What will we be learning this week?
Reading: Fables
Math: adding and subtracting two 3 digit numbers
Writing: writing a fairly tale
Science: Life Cycles
Fables
A fable is a very short story which promises to illustrate or teach us a lesson which is also called a moral. Usually if not always, fables are stories having animal characters that talk like humans.
Many common sayings come from Aesops Fables like "Honesty is the best policy," and "Look before you leap" are familiar examples of fables. Aesop is believed to have been a Greek slave who made up these stories. Nobody is really sure if Aesop made up these fables. What is certain, however, is that the Aesop's Fables are timeless. They are so wonderful that they have been told over and over again for several thousand years.

Math
Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction-Uses addition and subtraction within a 100 to solve one- and two-step word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
Science
In the second grade, students should be making observations of their immediate
surroundings, any changes taking place, and infer the causes of those changes. Making
inferences is the use of logical thought to show a relationship between observations or to provide an explanation of an observation. This idea will be further developed in third
grade when students begin to take a closer look at soil and the various components that
make up soil.

2ND GRADE WILL NOT BE TAKING THE CRCT THIS YEAR!!!!
Last year, 2nd grade took the “mock” CRCT as formal administration was not required by the state or county. Due to the roll out of our new Common Core Standards, the mock CRCT no longer aligns with what we have studied this year. Therefore, it would not be a valid instrument to administer to measure student progress. We have many other pieces of data to analyze student performance levels. Those include DRA’s, running records, RTI computation and problem solving probes. We will also be giving our end of year math common assessment designed by our 2nd grade teachers. If you have questions about any of this, please feel free to contact us. The CRCT practice packets have still been a valuable tool to help your child prepare for the ITBS that they will be taking in September of next year.
Free Braves Tickets
The Atlanta Braves is offering free tickets for “All-Star Student Achievers”. A letter for each student was sent home Friday, April 5th in Friday Folders. It provided the requirements and method to redeem the tickets.
What will we be learning this week?
Reading: Prefixes and suffixes
Math: adding and subtracting two 3 digit numbers
Writing: informational writing Jimmy Carter
Science: Jimmy Carter/ Start Life Cycles
Math
Practice adding using place value strategies: Addition strategies for 48 + 37 may include:
* Adding by place value: 40 + 30 = 70 and 8 + 7 = 15 and 70 + 15 = 85.
*Incremental adding (breaking one number into tens and ones); 48 + 10 = 58, 58 + 10 = 68,
68 + 10 = 78, 78 + 7 = 85
* Compensation (making a friendly number): 48 + 2 = 50, 37 – 2 = 35, 50 + 35 = 85
Practice adding and subtracting 10 or 100 to a given number (100-900) using mental math strategies. This may include:
Examples starting at 256:
* counting on by 100; 256, 356, 456, etc.
* counting on by 10; 256, 266, 276, 286, 296, 306, etc.
* counting back by 100; 256, 156, 56
* counting back by 10; 256, 246, 236, 226, 216, 206, 196
* 100 more than 256 is _____ (356)
*10 less than 256 is ______ (246)
* Start at _ _ _. Count up by 10s until I tell you to stop
Science
1. Metamorphosis - change in shape and form during development.
2. Egg – first stage in life cycle from which larva hatches.
3. Larva – juvenile phase with different physical appearance from adult.
4. Pupa – intermediate phase between larva and adult.
5. Adult – mature phase of insect (phase that is able to reproduce).
6. Cocoon – protected chamber for pupa while body undergoes transformation.
7. Caterpillar – larva phase for butterflies.
8. Chrysalis – essentially pupa stage of development within which the caterpillar undergoes the
transformation to become a butterfly.
9. Life cycle – cyclic pattern of life from birth to death.
