I am excited to announce that our class now has access to an online reading program called RAZ Kids, which focuses on both fluency development and reading comprehension. The students are able to work at their own pace as they select a book on their independent reading level, listen the book read aloud, read the book on their own, and then complete a comprehension quiz. Look for more information in your child's binder about how to log into this interactive program. Reading online and taking quizzes may count as your child's nightly reading. You may also download an app to access RAZ Kids using your phone or tablet/ipad.
Ask your child if they have earned any special STAR tickets in the school for good behavior in he hallway, playground, restroom, or cafeteria! These tickets are given out by all staff members to students who are doing an exemplary job of showing good behavior in public areas. Please see the picture below to see what your child may earn for getting STAR tickets! We are working hard on showing good STAR behavior to try to earn individual tickets from other teachers!

I hope everyone enjoyed their Fall Break. I sure did! I took a driving trip along the coast of Florida for a few days. The weather was wonderful and I saw some beautiful beaches . I did hear some wonderful stories from your children. They all were happy and tired on Monday.
We are getting right back to work in the classroom. Our class is a family like community now. All of our procedures are in place and we are starting to hit the academics hard. Please note that I realize that each child's personal best looks different, and I will be pushing each child to do their personal best. I was pretty lenient the first month of school, but now.... the bar is set high! Names must be on papers, directions, must be followed and writing must be neat. In math, we are finishing up Place Value and will then start to work on addition startegies. Please know that with this "new math", your child's work will look different. Sometimes their homework will be to practice a specific stategy, so if they say "my teacher wants me to do it this way"...... it's probably true! If you don't understand it and your child can't do their homework .... don't worry, that tells me that I need to keep working on that strategy with your child.
We will be working on asking the 5 W questions while we read. Please keep having your child read each night and remember to sign their homework calendar to show that they read. During writing we will continue to work on personal narratives and getting familiar with the school wide graphic organizer. For science we have been reviewing map skills and are now learning about our great state, it's regions and rivers.
