Homework

Math: Today we began something new, dividing fractions.  The students had to learn how to multiply them before they could do division of fractions.  There are three simple steps that the students were taught to follow.  They were also taught a jingle to say in the event that they got confused.  The Jingle goes like this, Ours is not to question why, just invert and multiply.  This jingle only pertains to division of fractions.  There are also three basic simple steps that they can use to follow if they can not remember the jingle.  Those steps are:  Keep it, change it, flip it.  They would keep the first fraction, change the division sign to a multiplication sign and then flip the last fraction.  Then they just multiply numerator and numerator and then denominator to denominator.  Here is an example:  1/3 divided by 3/4.

Step 1: Keep the first fraction       1/3

Step  2: Change the sign         Multiplication

Step 3: Flip the second fraction:      4/3

Then just solve the new problem you created: 1/3  x  4/3= 4/9

I hope this is helpful.  I do not think the students will have a problem with this since it came so easily to them in class.

Reading:  The Students are required to read for 50 minutes each night to a parent or adult.  Then they are required to have their reading log filled in with the appropriate information and signed so they can return it the next day.

Social Studies:  The students were given a Social Studies Vocabulary sheet that they needed their books to complete.  This activity is to help build their skills of locating information in a Text Book with instructions.

Homework

Today we practiced using the LCM and the GCF to solve adding and subtracting fractions.  They have a homework sheet with ten problems to complete for homework.  Here are the steps to solving:

1.  Ask are your denominators the same? If not find the LCM of both of the denominators.

2.  Determine what the LCM is and find out what you multiply the fraction by to get the LCM as the new denominator.  Make sure you remember what you do to the top you must also do to the bottom.

3.  Then do the operation that the problem calls for.  (Addition or Subtraction)

4.  Then reduce if necessary.  Here is an example: LCM is 12

    3/4   x 3/3=9/12

+   2/6   x 2/2= 4/12

Homework

Today the students learned how to find the LCM of any given number in Math.  They were given a worksheet that has three numbers on it and a venn diagram.  They need to find the first ten multiples of the number given and place it under that number in the circle.  Then they need to place the ones that they have in common in the middle of both circles.  Then the least/lowest common number/multiple is the LCM and should be written on the line after LCM.  Example:  The multiples of 2 are: 2,4,6,8,10 The multiples of 10 are: 10,20,30,40,50.  The least one they have in common is 10 so the LCM for these two factors is 10.  I hope this helps.

Reminider that you have to read for 50 minutes and you have to study for your matter test tomorrow.  I have attached the link for the matter jeopardy game if you would like to play it at home.  Enjoy and Good luck!!!Download matter_jeopardy_2.ppt

Educational Activity Day

Next Friday, October 31st our class will be participating in an Educational Activity day.  This day is designed to explore some of the physical and chemical reactions in matter that the students have been learning about.  Ask your student what they learned next Friday when they get home.

Students have asked if we are going to have a party for Halloween.  We are not permitted to have a party for Halloween, however, if your student would like to bring in a snack for the class that would be perfectly fine.  Students are not to wear costumes, so please do not allow them to wear them to school.  Have them save them for that night if they wish.

Please contact Mrs. Morris via email if you wish to come and help/participate with our class on our Educational Activity day at marsha.morris@cobbk12.org

Thank you,

Mrs. Morris

Homework 10-24-08

The only homework that the students had for tonight was to read for 50 minutes.  Relax and read a good book this weekend.  See you on Monday.  Mrs. Morris

Homework

Today in Math we reviewed a concept that the students were taught in 4th grade, multiplying fractions and whole numbers.  We reviewed what the proper steps were and how to convert an inproper fraction in to a mixed number.  Here is some helpful hints to help your student with their homework.

Hint:  Step 1- place the whole number over the number one, making it a fraction.

Step 2- Multiply the numerators together and then  multiply the denominators together.

Step 3- Once you get your answer, and it is in improper form you must convert it to a mixed         number.  You divide the denominator into the numerator.  The number of times it goes into it, becomes your whole number.  The remainder becomes your new numerator and the divisor becomes your denominator.  Remember, once the same always the same.  Hope this helps.

Homework

Read for 50 minutes and log your time on your reading log.

Math- Fractions, decimals and percents homework page PW66.  (Hint: If you are given a decimal, move the decimal point two places to the right to find the percent.  If you are given the percent, move the decimal two places to the left to find the correct decimal.  If you are given a fraction, determine what the decimal should be first and then find the percentage from there.  Good Luck!!!

Math Text book

Here is a link that you can use to access your math textbook in the event that you have forgotten something at school or you may need to look at a model of how to work out the problems.  A Harcourt Login letter will be sent home in the November 15th's Thursday folder.  Please keep this information in a safe place so that you have it when you need it.  The website to access the Math book and workbook online is www.eharcourtschoHmath04_gr5ol.com.  Good Luck!!!!

Atlanta Symphony

The fifth grade class will be going on their annual Performing Arts field trip on December 9th, 2008.  This year we will be going to the Atlanta Symphony where the students will hear music that has been played for them throughout the year in their music specials.  I can not wait to see the excitement as they get to experience this wonderful use of the Arts located right here in Atlanta.
